Press Release:   July 2010

Si (as OSA) Contributes to Bone Quality through the Dual Action of Stimulating Bone Formation and Inhibiting and Bone Loss

In his latest paper published in the prestigious journal NUTRITION  “Effects of calcium sources and soluble silicate on bone metabolism and the related gene expression in mice”.

Nutrition 25 (2009) : 581 – 589

Professor Maehira from Faculty of Medicine, University of the Ryukyus, Nishihara, Okinawa, Japan found that soluble Si (as OSA) stimulated cell growth and promoted bone metabolic turnover in favour of bone formation through stimulation of the related MRNA gene expression in animal experiments.

Comment:

It was interesting that in this paper, the Si content in coral sand which has high Calcium content found  that Si as OSA is important in bone formation.  Earlier research has found that Si is involved in early stage of bone calcification helping Calcium to be deposited in the bone apatite.  This latest study has added more evidence to the importance of the trace mineral, Si in  bone formation.

A consumption of 25 mg per day of Si is sufficient to improve Bone Mineral Density (BMD) significantly especially in young women and male.

Drinking a litre of Spritzer Natural Mineral Water would give you 35 mg and hence more than enough to benefit your bone.
