Silicon (Si) as OSA may be Helpful in Preventing Osteoporosis in Post Menopausal Women whose Calcium Intake is Insufficient

A new research published in Biol.Trace.Elt.Res. (June 2009) 128 (3) : 239 – 247    “Silicon Supplementation Improves the Bone Mineral Density of Calcium-Deficient Ovariectomized Rats by Reducing Bone Resorption” showed that Silicon (Si) Supplementation significantly increased the Bone Mineral Density (BMD) of the femur and tibia in Calcium-deficient Ovariectomized (OVX) rats, while no change was observed with Si supplementation in the BMD of the spine, femur and tibia in the adequate and high Calcium groups.  The authors concluded that Si supplementation may also prove to be helpful in preventing osteoporosis in postmenopausal women whose calcium intake is insufficient.

Comment:

Calcium deficiency is a very common condition in many people, especially in postmenopausal women.  This new study seem to indicate that Si as OSA can be helpful to alleviate this dreaded ailment.

Drinking Spritzer Mineral Water which is naturally rich with Si as OSA may have positive effects on sufferers of postmenopausal osteoporosis lacking calcium.

The University of London and University of Keele both from England has tested Spritzer Natural Mineral Water to contain ~ 35 mg of Si in one litre of the water.

Many experts are recommending an intake of at least 25 mg per day to obtain Si healthy benefits.
